PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

THE PITMEN PAINTERS

by LEE HALL

directed by STACI GRANT and LEE HAMBY

Next up for The 5 & Dime is a collaboration with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. THE PITMEN PAINTERS by Lee Hall, comes to Jacksonville fresh from an acclaimed run in London and on Broadway. This earthy, honest examination of art in ordinary life retells the true story of a group of Newcastle (UK) miners in the 1930’s whose lives change when they mistakenly enroll in an Art class. They went on to gain worldwide attention as artists known as the Ashington Group. Like Hall’s acclaimed film and musical Billy Elliot, this script tells another inspiring story of what happens when working class laborers (or any disenfranchised group) are exposed to the arts and have the opportunity to realize their potential.

All of our sponsors are helping to support the arts. We ask that you support them by visiting their websites and giving them your business and patronage when possible.

Under the sensitive and perceptive direction of STACI GRANT and LEE HAMBY this production abounds in skillful performances, introducing us to interesting and colorful characters who make this play richly and thoroughly entertaining… This is theatre in the best sense, moving, funny, human and genuine.
