THE 5 & DIME WAREHOUSE
648-B East Union St

PROGRAM

A PICASSO

by JEFFREY HATCHER

directed by CARYL BUTTERLEY

“Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.” ~ PABLO PICASSO

THE PLAY

German occupied Paris, 1941. World-renowned artist Pablo Picasso has been escorted to an underground vault for an interview with Miss Fischer, a cultural attaché for the Third Reich. Her simple request: “We need you to identify three paintings”. What ensues is a taut yet sly battle over politics, sex, and art’s place in violent and dangerous times.

THE VENUE

The 5 & Dime is excited to announce we now have a home base which we’ll be using primarily for rehearsals and storage, and the occasional event. It also happens to be the perfect environment for transporting you to a “storage vault somewhere in Paris” so we decided to pair this particular play with The Warehouse and invite you all to come see how your patronage helps us continue to grow.

A WORD ABOUT THE WAREHOUSE: This isn’t The Cummer. We’ve cleaned up in all the important places but expect a warehouse space on a loading dock and wear comfortable and cool clothing. And in return, we promise a visceral and raw evening of storytelling that will stay with you long after you’ve headed home.

THE RECEPTION

We’ll be featuring the work of local visual artist JEREMIAH DOUGLAS during the pre-show reception and will be serving up refreshments and music sure to transport you to Paris 1941.

REVIEW

DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM, eu Jacksonville, say:

Director CARYL BUTTERLEY commands a superb cast! She has assembled a piece of history that makes good theatre; it is based on actual events and is interesting and provocative… RICK DE SPAIN is Pablo Picasso. His is a confrontational character study in a performance that is sharply and creatively delineated… KAREN OVERSTREET is persistent as Miss Fischer. Chalk up another fine performance for this talented and versatile actress. She brings considerable charm and magnetism to a difficult and often unsympathetic role… Don’t miss A PICASSO with its intriguing story and exceptionally fine acting and direction.
