PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

33 VARIATIONS

by MOISÉS KAUFMAN

directed by LEE HAMBY

When does an inquiry become an obsession?

Ludwig van Beethoven, ailing, impoverished, and nearly deaf, sets aside other compositions to create 33 variations on a simple waltz theme by Anton Diabelli. Katherine Brandt, a musicologist in rapid physical decline due to the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is driven across the globe to determine the reason behind Beethoven’s compulsive treatment of this theme. Moving between the early 19th Century, the present, and a performance of the piano variations themselves, Moisés Kaufman’s 33 Variations examines these parallel stories of preoccupation.

Performances will be at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida. Established in 1958, the core collection of 60 pieces from Mrs. Cummer’s estate has grown to include nearly 5,000 works of art. The 2.5 acres of historic gardens, set against the St. Johns River, serves as a centerpiece of beauty for all to enjoy. In addition, Art Connections, the Museum’s nationally recognized interactive education center, enhances the cultural learning of more than 130,000 visitors annually

DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM, eu Jacksonville, say:

.. LEE HAMBY’s casting and direction has made “33 Variations” a powerful and provocative theatrical experience .. JASON WOODS gives a masterful performance .. SINDA NICHOLS plays this role with a special poignancy .. brilliantly played by JEFFREY WELLS, who returns to the stage after too long an absence .. JOSHUA TAYLOR gives a keen performance, with assured hauteur and vocal dynamism .. KRISTIN WALSH gives a spirited and involved performance .. FRANKLIN RITCH speaks as much with his eyes and facial expressions as he does with his words .. CAROLINE LEE is a strong and versatile Dr. Ladenburger, and provides a lot of the humor in this play ..

JANET HARPER, Folio Weekly, says:

.. one of the best productions I’ve seen in town.. played gently and honestly. It’s touching, funny and beautifully acted.. I don’t know if it was the pre-show wine, but at one point I noted, “I’m in love with SINDA NICHOLS.” She has a way of pulling the audience in just with her eyes .. Solid performances are also given by JEFFREY WELLS as Diabelli, creator of the mundane waltz, and JASON WOODS, who plays the maestro himself .. superbly acted by KRISTEN WALSH and FRANKLIN RITCH ..
